Carol Chavez, Navajo beader

Carol Chavez

I was born in Gallup, New Mexico and was raised in the small community of Haystack, (30 miles east of Gallup). I am a member of the Navajo tribe and my clans are Sagebrush and Apache. I am married and have seven children, five are girls and two are boys.

I became interested in beading at age 18. My mother and my mother-in-law inspired me to do my beadwork. My mother had special skills in making unique sash belts (woven belts worn with Navajo traditional dresses). My mother-in-law weaves Navajo rugs. Although beadwork may seem very different from rug weaving it shares many similarities. I work on a loom, but one that is much smaller. I create many of the same designs and patterns that are found in traditional rugs and have adapted them to suit the necklaces I make.

My most recent art pieces have been quite popular. They are long beaded necklaces and chokers. I create my art pieces using glass beads, silver beads, a wooden loom, thread and needle. My necklace designs include: Tree of Life, Kokopelli, various rug designs and rain colors. Completing one necklace (33" to 38" long) takes constant skills in coordinating colors. I enjoy creating each necklace.

Jewelry making brings my husband and I together by communicating and exchanging design ideas. My husband has a full time job and I am a stay at home mother. My art keeps me personally motivated as well as contributes to some of our family's financial needs. I like working at home as it allows me to be close to my children. I sell most of my jewelry locally and do take special orders also.
